Sew a Garden Flag
Garden or yard flags are an extension of those flags regularly seen in public gardens in cities or hanging from lamp posts in downtown areas or on edifices announcing a gala museum, religious or fine art event.
Garden flags for home make great gifts and are easy to sew too whether for seasonal and perennial favorite times – St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, spring, summer, autumn, announcing a new baby, graduation or any celebratory event, the garden flag is a special occasion proclamation for all to see.
A thin willow branch or dowel rod could be used to hang the flag using twine or cord to decorate a porch or use as a window display. These happy, waving flags add welcoming visual interest to home, garden or business and provide an extra display of color and whimsy for any outdoor space.
For a small size flag use a 15-inch by 20-inch nylon, canvas, or weather-resistant polyester fabric (20-inches by 30-inches for large size) for outside use; woven cotton-blends for inside window or wall hanging.
Hem-finish the fabric rectangle edges with a narrow straight-stitched hem. Turn under one short end an additional 1-inch or more to make a rod-pocket for the pole or branch to slide through.
To decorate the flag, cut out simple fabric shapes using cookie cutter shapes, free clip-art or finding inspiration from children's coloring books for template ideas. Cut out the desired shapes, then machine-stitch onto the flag using a narrow zigzag or satin stitch around the shapes' edges to secure to the background fabric. For outside garden flags, once the shape is stitched to the background fabric, cut away the background fabric from the now appliqued shape so that the garden flag will show the design from both sides of the hanging flag.
Flag poles and accessories can be found in local hardware stores or on many online websites. Flags made as indoor window decorations could also be hung using window suction cups or strung on cording to grace a mantel. If the fabric allows, spray a fabric protector onto both sides of an outdoor garden flag to provide some UV protection.
Place the garden flag along a driveway, sidewalk or hang on a fence or patio for a cheerful touch to outdoor spaces. Spring is coming and with the change of seasons hope for better times.
