Faggoting & Tatting on Collar
This is part three of the pattern which began last June 27, 2019.
The term faggoting is used for an embroidery stitch which joins across an open space between pieces of fabric, lace edging, insertions, entredeux and braids. It may be plain cross stitch in appearance or fancy.
This collar by Norma Benporath will require planning and concentration. It is a vintage public domain pattern.

In step 3 the completed line of daisies was sewn to the previous row of binding. Then another row of binding was added which attached to the open side of the daisies. The faggoting stitch was again used to join the second line of bias binding. This additional step is adding width to the collar. The following row of tatting will attach to the last row of binding just added. This row has larger repeats.
As you follow these instructions, it may be helpful to bring the original photo online and refer to it. I found that rotating it helped to make more clear what is a very fuzzy photo.
The next section of the collar is described as "wide-shaped insertion" in which the shape of the individual smaller motifs create a curve for the lace.
The center of each motif is a 4-leaf clover.
R 7 - 3 - 7 clr, dnrw leave no space. Repeat 3 x.
I have mentioned before when modernizing vintage patterns that the photo does not always match the directions. In that case it has been my custom to go with what I see. Unfortunately, this photo is so terrible that I can be certain of nothing. I started to tat it but saw the problems so I turned to drawing a diagram.
The result shows me an oval-shaped motif. There is one problem remaining though. In the directions that is another set of rings and chains supposed to fit in there some where.
Row 3
Using two shuttles or needle and ball, tat a set of four 4-leaf clovers. R 7 - 3 - 7 clr dnrw leave no space. Repeat 2x.
Use a split ring to climb out from the center into the outer round.
A. SR 7 / 7 - 3 close ring mock picot climbing into another split ring.
B. SR 3 - 3 - 3 / 3 - 3 - 3 clr dnrw
CH 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 rw
C. R 3 - 3 - 3 + (join to 2nd picot of next ring of the center) 3 - 3 - 3 rw
CH 6 - 6 rw
D. R 3 - 3 - 3 + (join to 1st picot of next ring of the center) 3 - 3 - 3 rw
CH 3 (- 3) x8 rw
E. R 3 - 3 - 3 + (join to 2nd picot of next ring of the center) 3 - 3 - 3 rw

CH 3 - 3 - 3 secure to bottom of first ring and finish off ends.
So, here lies the problem. The four rings which make the 4-leaf clover each have two picots. 4 x 2 = 8. There are 8 points of attachment and we are instructed to make 9 rings. I suggest that we stop at the * and finish off.
Any suggestions most welcome. I will continue to try to improve this section as I prepare the last two stages of the collar.
